Ashwagandha is commonly known as winter cherry or Indian ginseng .It is recognised as an important medicinal plant in traditional systems of medicine . In Sanskrit “ashwa” means horse and “gandha” meaning smell. Thus the name ASHWAGANDHA was given to this plant due to the smell of the roots resembling that of a sweating horse.
Though there is no reference about it in Vedas. But all Ayurvedic classic literature like Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhatta have elaborately mentioned the properties, action and therapeutic uses of Ashwagandha in their works. Ashwagandha was first mentioned by sage Punarvasu Atreya over 4000 years ago. Subsequently the medicinal properties of this plant were mentioned in Ayurvedic books such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga etc .
It is a small woody shrub . Not more than 1.5 m above the ground. It has elliptical green leaves and small five petal flower . The seeds are red in colour . The plant requires little attention and irrigation , usually surviving in parched conditions where most of the vegetation would not survive .
Most parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine, including the leaves, bark and root.
