Ayurvedic classification

Dosage :
Adults – 10 – 12 leaves boiled in water – Powder – 3 to 5 g or 1 to 3 g twice a day
Children under 12 : 6-8 leaves – Powder 1 to 2 g twice a day
Senna has been recognised by FDA as a Natural Laxative for short term constipation. It is considered to be safe for children over 2 years of age.
Side Effects : Generally Senna is considered to be safe. Possibly unsafe when taken in large quantities for long term in high doses. Usually shouldn’t be taken for more than two weeks continuously. As Long time intake can cause dependency on Laxatives.
For Constipation Triphala is safer option for Long term. You can continue taking Triphala or Psyllium husk for years without any side effects.
Precautions : Generally considered safe for Pregnant & for Breastfeeding women as long as taken taken in small doses.
Avoid if suffering from dehydration, diarrhea, or loose stools. It can make these conditions worse.
Senna should be avoided by people with abdominal pain (either diagnosed or diagnosed), intestinal blockage, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, stomach inflammation, anal prolapse, or hemorrhoids.
Heart disease: Senna can cause electrolyte disturbances and might make heart disease worse.
